Is posting on Facebook like getting a tattoo?

Throughout life we are practicing selective memory. Experiences fade. Stories change in the retelling. We are constantly redefining our past. It's the only way we can really live with ourselves.… Continue

Happy Rebirthday to Meeeee! :)

I don't have much time. I'm writing this from a hotel room 100 miles away from home and I managed to forget my laptop's power supply. But that's okay. It forces me to focus on what I really came all this way to do.

Which is, basically, to reinvent myself.

It's not an easy thing to do. I've had a very many good…

Dear Boots,

Get ready to rumble! I know you're used to sitting there, trembling in the corner. But that's all over now. You were made for walking tall and straight and proud, right through the mud and dust and grime.

I wanna see stains. I wanna see rips and tears and…

H4pp¥ G33k Pr1Ð3 Ð4¥!

Geek Pride is celebrated May 25th each year, chosen in celebration of the day in 1977 when the first Star Wars movie premiered and coinciding with Towel Day, which is in recognition of Douglas Adams and a celebration of A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Perhaps the "Don't Panic" towel should be the official Geek Pride flag?

I love that it's now cool to be a Geek!

If you haven't yet admitted to being a geek, it's time to come out of the closet!… Continue

Forks in the road...

Our attitude towards life determines life's attitude towards us. ~John N. Mitchel

When I was 21 years old I stopped answering the phone because I couldn't get over the fear of not knowing who would be on the other side of the line or what they would want. I rarely spoke in groups, even amongst friends. Eventually, I hardly had any friends. Life was just too scary, too painful, too unpredictable.

As a way to compensate for my lack of… Continue

Change Is Hard

My worst fear in life is not achieving. Not succeeding. Not living every moment to it's fullest. Being so shy and self conscious and introverted is not exactly helping matters! Every day I try a little bit more to overcome shyness with boldness, self consciousness with self confidence, fear with faith. I'm getting there. But it's so hard, such a slow process, and I am so very impatient! I'd love to just wake up one day and be a different person.…

What is love?

"Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." ~Paul in I Corinthians 13:4-7

I long ago decided that there is no such thing as love. At least, not in the… Continue

Are you a responsible CEO?

According to Jon Gordon in his book The Energy Bus, CEO stands for "Chief Energy Officer," someone who brings out the best in others and, thereby, also themselves.

I admit I didn't care for the book itself, but I had to read it for work and this part hit home for me. I'm a very internal person and don't always remember to project positive energy. But when I do, boy is it a different world!

Just smiling and making eye contact can make such a difference in the way… Continue

Thou shalt not spend a single cent that isn’t absolutely required!

I'm starting a videography business and am very excited to have just purchased my first camera, a Canon XL1. I'm also stunned, like a deer in the headlights. No excuses now, I either put myself out there and just do it, or I prove once and for all that I have no follow through and am never going get anywhere in life, ever. I'm terrified of both.

I've been working my way through Brian Armstrong's book "Breaking Free." His… Continue

The Power of Silence

What's the first thing you do when you're alone? For most people, it's either turn on the telly or turn on some music, even if it's just for "background noise". I'm guilty of it myself. And you know what? I'm beginning to miss my own company.

That's the difference between reading a book and listening to an audiobook or watching a movie. Space to think and actually reflect about what you're reading. Other media just keeps coming at you, keeps moving forward, whether you're ready for… Continue

Is the bookstore the new library?

I'm here at the Barnes & Noble cafe and all around me are folks are flipping through books and magazines off the shelves whilst sipping their lattes. I don't think they plan on buying.

I remember as a little girl going into a Barnes & Noble for the first time and seeing what looked like very large dining room tables in between the aisles. I was really confused, were they really actually inviting people to sit down? It looked like the library. I couldn't comprehend why they'd… Continue

Am I dreaming?

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." ~ Henry David Thoreau

I want to do it all.

1. Write a screenplay.

2. Become a director.

3. Write a book.

4. Become a successful blogger.

5. Become a photographer.

6. Start my own videography business.

7. Live abroad.

8. Play the violin… Continue

"I sacrificed everything so my kids could have a better life."

I overheard someone saying this the other day and it really struck a nerve with me. Everyone says it, don't they? I, myself, do not have kids and I don't understand this statement. I often feel very sad for the person who says it.

The thing that bothers me most is that what is expected of their children is that, among other things, they will grow up, get married, and have kids of their own. And before you know it, guess what those kids are going to be saying? "I have to sacrifice… Continue

The Choice to Be Happy

Everything is so much better now, right? Bigger better TV's with an endless variety of channels to choose from, not to mention the ability to save shows for later and fast forward the commercials. Education has improved tremendously, preschool and college are standards, and there are all manner of extra curricular activities to keep kids sharp when they aren't in class. We can travel anywhere, do anything, have anything we want.

As the standard of living continues, to rise, is it… Continue

Working With Parkinson's Law

Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.

I devote my Saturday's to writing. I get up noonish, fix something to eat, and then sit at my keyboard in my PJ's for the next twelve to eighteen hours getting not that much done.

This weekend I decided a change of scenery was in order and trekked over to the local bookstore coffee shop only to discover that, horror of horrors, there was no where for me to plug in my laptop. I have only a… Continue

Experiment of the Week: Getting ready the night before.

I am decidedly not a morning person. I invariably get up ten minutes later than I should and spend the next twenty minutes running around like a crazy person trying to get together everything I need. I've been known to forget my lunch or to brush my hair or even, once, put on shoes. I keep a spare toothbrush at work, just in case.

It's a well known productivity/organizational tip to prepare for the morning the night before, so I finally decided to give it a try. Clothes are… Continue

Self Storage - Solution or Symptom?

I recently cleaned out a storage unit I had been paying $30/mo for. It was mostly filled with books I loved as well as a few household goods. I’d needed it after losing my house a year and a half ago and finally cleaned it out because $500 was the limit I was willing to pay to store any of those items. After that, it would probably be cheaper just to repurchase everything.

Now, I’m a minimalist at heart, and even before moving out had gone through everything I owned, trimming… Continue

One Laptop Per Child meets No Child Left Behind

“What children lack is not capability, it is opportunity and resources.”

~One Laptop per Child

The One Laptop per Child project strives to design, manufacture, and distribute laptops that are sufficiently inexpensive to provide every child in the developing world access to knowledge and modern forms of education. The laptops are designed to be affordable, rugged, portable, and, above all, they are designed as a tool to unlock the unlimited potential within… Continue

Inside Look: STEAMPUNK - A Geek Subculture

Even if you've never heard of steampunk, chances are you've seen it in movies like The City of Lost Children, 12 Monkeys, Hellboy, Van Hellsing, The Time Machine, and more. The steampunk subculture has its roots in science fiction literature, specifically, science fiction in which… Continue
