There are black hat hackers, gray hat hackers, and white hat hackers. Black hat hackers are the ones that come to mind when most people hear “hacker.” These are malicious people who wreak havoc on the net either for gain or petty enjoyment. White hat hackers are the least known and hack for the sole purpose in understanding and evaluating the security systems of various programs and the credibility of sites. Lastly, there are gray hat hackers. These are the hackers that are neutral and do not take either side. They are neither good nor bad.
Controversy shrouds Nasdaq's recent situation. Hackers breached Nasdaq but did not do anything. Authorities say that they were merely looking around and soon left. If the hackers did anything more, the results would have been catastrophic.
