Hey All,
I've been thinking about this for the past few days now. Have we really become too addicted to social media and just electronic communication in general? Personally, this humble writer thinks so. It seems that we cannot live without having to devote time to social media anymore, whether it be YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace. It seems to have become hard wired to us. One big question is though, is this a good or bad thing, or both?
In a way this is not surprising. Humans by nature desire to socialize and interact with others, it is just the way we are. Once the information revolution started up however, it took socialization to a whole new level. One could interact with friends, relatives, or just other people as long as the other person had a means of replying, almost anywhere in the world. Have we become too infatuated with this though. The answer, in this writer's opionion, is yes and no. Social media can have many benefits and drawbacks.
One downside of social media is that often it can distract us from reality and what really needs to matter at the time. An example of this would be texting while driving. Sure, one can interact with another efficiently and quickly, without too much effort on the user part. Is it worth the risk of an accident and possibly other's lives though though? Most, including this writer, would say "of course not". There is one example of how we are too addicted to social media. Another example of this would be texting, writing on Facebook/MySpace, etc... in school in class. One can see this happen frequently. This time though it would be distracting the student or students from focusing what is important at the time. We have a tendency to focus too much on social media.
Social media is not totally a bad thing either though. As stated earlier, it makes communication easier and faster. It can also bring families closer together, especially large ones spread over large areas. Mail and messages can be sent instantly, as can photos, music or other files. Social media can save time and in some cases even save money. One example of social media would be my school. All of the teachers have email, and if a student has a question, say on homework, they can email the teacher who assigned it and get the answer usually in one night. This would be a good example of how social media, and electronic communication in general, can be a good thing.
In my personal opinion, social media and electronic communication can be a good thing, but there are times and places to use it, and to not use it. What do you think about this? Do you think we are too addicted to social media and electronic communication?
Cheers!
