No not any time soon, not even after 20 more years. I still know several people who still own and use DOS, Windows 3.xx, Windows 95, Windows NT 4x, Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows 2000 PC's. Even as much of a disaster Windows ME was and how pretty much useless Windows 3.xx is today - all of the versions are all living well and being supported by their respective fan communities. Even OS2 Warp 3 and 4 along with OS2 Warp server are all living on and being supported by their respective fan communities.

With all of this being a fact that such crappy operating systems like Windows ME are still out there being supported by their enthusiast groups, this bodes well for the longevity of the popular and beloved Windows XP for decades to come.

Simple logic if no one likes it or not it's going to happen. It's the older version out of all of them. It would make since that Microsoft would pursue newer technology. There is at least 3 indications of this being the truth when one, they are making DirectX 11 for Win 7 and Vista. 10 doesn't exist for XP except for doing things 3rd party methods. Yeah they don't have as much DirectX 10 games; however, cards with DirectX 10 weren't cheap a while ago. Now that cards are cheaper, people who are on a budget will be able to get a DirectX 10 card and run games with DirectX 10.

If anyone remembers it took XP about 2 years before it was completely acceptable. MS erred on the side of Security when they released Vista. SP1 fixed many of the "Bugs" but it was still heavily ladened on Security. Now with Windows 7 it will be up to the user on whether or not they want to use the UAC and how much of it. For the PC Novice I really believe that the UAC is a Necessary Evil to prevent Trojans and other such malicious evils.

I don't think Windows XP should become obsolete. In my opinion, I think its the best OS Windows has ever had. I have tried Vista with SP1 and it's not great by any means. It's slow and has too many command prompts to accept certain changes you want to make or programs trying to start. I believe they should keep XP around even when Windows 7 is released, because we can't be sure that Windows 7 is the answer and solution to improve the Vista OS.

I hope that XP will still be around after Windows 7 comes out so if something happens there is an OS to fall back on. Like in the case with Vista.
